Pauses, slides, and audience reactions shift real timing, so plan around the range rather than a single number.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is speaking time calculated?

Word count ÷ speaking pace in words per minute gives minutes. For example, 650 words at 130 WPM is 5 minutes. We also show a ±10% range, because real delivery rarely holds one exact pace.

How many words is a 5 minute speech?

At 130 WPM, about 650 words. At 110 WPM it’s about 550, and at 160 WPM about 800. Measure your own pace above for a number that fits you.

How long does it take to say 1,000 words?

About 7:42 at 130 WPM, 9:05 at 110 WPM, and 6:15 at 160 WPM. Paste your script above to time your exact word count at your pace.

Where do the 110, 130, and 160 WPM presets come from?

They’re working approximations to give you a starting point, not research norms. Pace varies by person, language, and setting, so the most accurate option is to measure your own.

How does the speaking speed test work?

Choose Start, read the passage aloud, and choose Stop. We divide the passage’s word count by the stopwatch time. There’s no microphone access, and nothing is recorded or uploaded.

Can I use this as a text to speech time calculator?

Yes. Text-to-speech voices read at their own speeds, so set a custom pace that matches your voice or app setting, then paste the text.

Is my script stored or sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing you type leaves this page.

Can I dictate a script instead of typing it?

Yes. Morning is a Mac dictation app: hold Control + Space, speak, release, and your words paste into whatever app you’re using. Transcription runs on your Mac. Free trial, then pay once: $19 launch price, then $29 and $49, with no subscription.
