The Best Dictation App for Mac in 2026

Short answer: If you want your voice to stay on your Mac and you hate subscriptions, pick an app that runs on your Mac and that you pay for once. Morning, VoiceInk and MacWhisper all work that way. If you need dictation on a Windows PC or phone too, Wispr Flow or Superwhisper cover more devices. Apple Dictation is free and already on your Mac.

How we picked

We looked at four things:

  1. Where your voice goes. Does the app turn speech into text on your Mac, or send it to a server?
  2. What you pay over time. One price, or a bill every month?
  3. Where the text lands. Can you dictate into any app, like Mail, Slack, Notes or your code editor?
  4. What Mac you need. Some apps need Apple silicon or a newer macOS.

1. Morning: private dictation that lives in your notch

Morning is a dictation app for Mac made by Seattle Intelligence Labs. You hold a key, talk, and let go. Your words show up wherever you are typing. Speech is turned into text on your Mac, so it works offline and your voice never hits a server.

  • Price: $19 once for the first 20 buyers, then $29, then $49. Every license includes lifetime updates and a 14-day refund. (askmorning.com, checked Nov 2, 2026)
  • Trial: 3 days free, no account.
  • Needs: macOS 14 or later. Works on Apple silicon and Intel Macs, with or without a notch.
  • Extras: It knows which app you are in (Gmail, Notes, Slack, your terminal), and it shows music and AirPods controls in the notch.
  • Good fit if: you only dictate on a Mac and want to pay once.
  • Not a fit if: you need dictation on Windows or a phone.

Morning is not out yet. The download button says “Coming soon” as of Nov 2, 2026. While you wait, try our free typing vs speaking speed test to see how much faster you talk than type.

2. Wispr Flow: best if you need every device

Wispr Flow works on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. It has a free plan with 2,000 words a week on desktop. Pro is $15 per user per month, or $12 a month if you pay for a year (wisprflow.ai/pricing, checked Nov 1, 2026).

Wispr Flow’s help center says “An internet connection is required for transcription” (docs.wisprflow.ai, checked Oct 26, 2026). So it will not work on a plane or with bad Wi-Fi.

See the full breakdown on our Wispr Flow pricing page, or compare it with Morning on our Wispr Flow alternative page.

3. Superwhisper: free local dictation, paid cloud extras

Superwhisper has a free plan with unlimited dictation using local Whisper models, so that part stays on your device. Pro adds cloud models, AI rewriting modes and file transcription. Pro costs $8.49 a month, $84.99 a year, or $249.99 once, and one license covers all your Macs, PCs and phones (superwhisper.com, checked Nov 2, 2026). New users get 3,000 words of Pro for free.

  • Good fit if: you want lots of settings and modes and you use more than one kind of device.
  • Watch out: the AI modes and cloud models are where your words can leave your Mac.

4. MacWhisper: best for transcribing files

MacWhisper is best known for turning audio and video files into text, and it also has dictation for any app. The free version is free forever. Pro is EUR 64 once with lifetime updates (macwhisper.com, checked Nov 1, 2026). It can run local models on your Mac or switch to cloud models.

  • Good fit if: you transcribe interviews, lectures or podcasts, and dictate now and then.

5. VoiceInk: open source and one price

VoiceInk runs speech to text with local models on your Mac, and its code is open source. It costs $25 for one Mac, $39 for two, or $49 for three, paid once, with a 14-day refund (tryvoiceink.com, checked Nov 1, 2026). It also has an iPhone app.

  • Good fit if: you want to read the code yourself, or you like to tinker.

6. Aqua Voice: fast, with a small free plan

Aqua Voice gives you 1,000 free words to start. Pro is $12 a month, or $10 a month billed yearly, and students get 70% off (aquavoice.com, checked Nov 1, 2026). It runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android.

  • Good fit if: you want a cross-device app and do not mind a monthly bill.

7. Apple Dictation: free and already on your Mac

Every Mac has Dictation built in. Turn it on in System Settings, then Keyboard, then Dictation. Apple says you can check in Keyboard settings whether your dictation is processed on your device (Apple Support, checked Nov 2, 2026). It adds commas and periods for you in supported languages, and it stops by itself after 30 seconds of silence.

  • Good fit if: you dictate a short note now and then.
  • Not a fit if: you want custom words, a hold-to-talk key, or dictation that feels instant in every app.

Which one should you pick?

  • You want privacy and one price, Mac only: Morning, VoiceInk or MacWhisper.
  • You need Windows or a phone too: Wispr Flow, Superwhisper or Aqua Voice.
  • You just want to try dictation for free: Apple Dictation or Superwhisper Free.
  • You mostly transcribe recordings: MacWhisper.

Not sure dictation is worth it? Take the typing vs speaking speed test. It takes about a minute and shows your words per minute both ways. If you write speeches or scripts, the speech time calculator tells you how long your text takes to read out loud.
